Is Yahoo sinking?

There was a blog post by BBC’s Maggie Shiels titled “The sinking house of Yang” where she talked about the number of Yahoo top level executives leaving Yahoo. I looked up at other websites and blogs and it turned out that the number of senior executives who left Yahoo since January this year is stunningly high. What I want to talk about here is, how did Yahoo start sinking? Did it hit an iceberg called Microsoft?

I am not sure if everybody will agree with me, but though Yahoo might have been moving slowly and lonely in the ocean of this Internet, it certainly did not seem to be sinking. The Microsoft offer seemed to be like an iceberg, and mind you, the Yahoo ship did not hit the Iceberg. The Iceberg followed the ship for almost an year and then hit the ship and hit it hard. The ship swerved, did everything in its power to wade that blow but the people in the ship have started leaving on life boats. And these people are not merely passengers, but the people are the crew and stewards of the ship. Without them, the likelihood of sinking increases.

Yahoo is a big ship, a very big ship. Over time, it has taken over many small and not so small ships. However, this time the blow has been big and the media coverage of the blow, even bigger. Even if Yahoo ultimately sinks, it may take years to fully go down. Till then, most of its important crew would have escaped and other  big ships like Microsoft would have taken parts of the Yahoo ship to add to their own.  What people who love Yahoo might hope for is that a big ship like Google would come, take away a small portion and then keep the Yahoo ship afloat for a longer duration.

The name of Yahoo may go down, but the legacy will continue. Lets see how it goes.
